A Ukrainian who is already abroad may be faced with a situation where the local migration service or other government agency asks to confirm the date of departure from Ukraine.
In this case, there may not be a corresponding stamp in the passport.
In this case, one of the methods of documentary confirmation is to obtain official information from the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine about crossing the state border.
You can organize the procedure through a lawyer in Ukraine.
What data does State Border Guard Service of Ukraine have?
SBGS maintains a state database of information about persons who crossed the state border of Ukraine.
It contains, in particular, the person’s identification data, document details, direction of crossing and system information about border control.
Therefore, the absence of a stamp in the passport does not in itself mean the absence of information about departure. See also: there is no exit stamp - how to confirm the crossing.
Why obtaining through a lawyer is convenient for those who are abroad
A person may be thousands of kilometers from Ukraine and not be able to personally engage in correspondence with government agencies.
In this case, the lawyer can:
- analyze the requirements of a foreign authority;
- determine the required period;
- prepare a lawyer’s request;
- properly document the client’s representation of the client;
- prepare consent to receive personal data;
- send documents to the competent SBGS department;
- receive and transfer to the client the official response.
Thus, the main communication with Ukrainian government agencies is carried out by a lawyer.

What documents are needed from the client
The specific list depends on the circumstances, however, for correct identification of a person, the following are first of all necessary:
- surname and first name;
- date of birth;
- citizenship;
- passport document details;
- copy of identity document;
- period for which you need to obtain information.
SBGS specifically emphasizes the need to provide information that allows one to uniquely identify a person.
For example, the absence of even such details as citizenship has already become the reason for refusal to provide information due to the impossibility of unambiguous identification of a person.

Why is the client's consent required?
Information about a person crossing the state border is classified as confidential information and personal data.
A lawyer’s authorisation alone should not be equated with unlimited access to any confidential information.
That is why, when receiving information about the client, it is advisable to separately document their consent to transfer the relevant personal data to the lawyer.
This is fundamentally different from a situation where someone tries, through a lawyer's request, to obtain information about the movements of another person without their consent.
In such cases, SBGS may refuse to provide data, and obtaining information may only be possible if there is a basis provided by law, in particular an appropriate court decision.
What can the SBGS response be used for?
Official information may be required to confirm:
- dates of departure from Ukraine;
- date of entry into Ukraine;
- stay of a person outside Ukraine;
- missing stamp oncrossing the border;
- information required by the foreign migration service.
In some cases, the document is used during migration procedures in European countries, in particular when it is necessary to confirm the circumstances of a person’s departure from Ukraine.
At the same time, the requirements of Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain, France, the Netherlands and other countries may differ, so before applying, it is advisable to check the requirements of the authority to which the document will be submitted. Do I need to translate the SBGS response
To use a Ukrainian document before a foreign authority, it is usually necessary to take into account the language requirements of a particular country.
It may be necessary to translate the document into German, Polish, Czech, French, English or another language.
The method of certifying the translation also depends on the requirements of the authority receiving the document.
Therefore, it is better to determine these requirements before submitting a request.
